Fitness Trends 2012 – Core Training

core-trainingFor most of us who are in our mid 40’s we may have woken up to discover that our tummy isn’t as flat and trim as it used to be. In fact, not only look somewhat pregnant, but in some cases we appear to be about nine months gone with a Sherman tank. We try changing our eating habits, which improves things a little bit, and we try walking, or push ups, or crunches, but it rarely lasts and we seem doomed to having our bellies arrive everywhere about five minutes ahead of us. Is there any way to really take care of the expanding corporation and bring things back to a more manageable level?

Why Core Training?

Yes, there is, and it is a new trend in fitness known as core training. Core training is exactly what it sounds like, working to improve the physical condition of your core, which most experts agree is the muscles of your midsection. This includes the front, back, and sides. There are also muscles that you may not be aware that you have.

The core muscles work to stabilize the entire body, and help your physical self function more effectively. You may know the core muscles by their given names, such as the “six pack” (which we would all love to have again), the internal and external obliques, the transverse abdominis, and the erector spinae. All of these muscles work in unison to maintain strength and coordination of movement. Because of this, it is highly advised to train them all as a group instead of targeting one area. Development of one core muscle group over another may turn out to be a detriment.

The benefits of core training are numerous. Core training improves overall functional fitness. Doing so allows you to more easily perform everyday functions such as walking, bending, squatting, and lifting.

If you suffer from low back pain, core training strengthens the muscles of the back and allows you to maintain the correct posture, reducing the subsequent strain on your spine that poor posture produces. Core training also reduces the risk for neck pain, torn muscles, ruptured disks, strained out ligaments, and incontinence.  Many of us complain of the aches and pains associated with aging, and many of these may be effectively managed through proper core training applications.

Core training also improves your athletic performance, assuming of course that you were athletic to begin with (you have to meet them half way). All powerful movements such as those utilize in athletic activities radiate outward from the core of the body. A stronger core enables you to generate much more powerful and efficient arm and leg movements.

And in what will matter to the majority of us…..core training helps you look better. When you look better, you can’t help but feel better about yourself. A firm, tight waistline and killer set of abs can do wonders for your overall sense of well being and esteem.
