Almost everyone who is actively involved in a fitness regimen will tell you that the best time to work said regimen is in the morning. The problem for many of us is that we are not morning people, and we tend not to really get moving until we have been up for a while and had a few shots of caffeine.  However, it is usually best to exercise in the morning, before the hustle and bustle of the day begins. Otherwise, you keep meaning to exercise, but keep finding other things that need doing.

That said, here are five basic tips designed to get you up and moving before the day starts in earnest:

1)      Get ready the night before. We tend to help our children get ready for school by making sure they have all assignments completed and clothes laid out for the next day, and all before they go to bed.  It is recommended that you do the same for yourself. Lay out your exercise clothes, and set out something healthy to eat like a banana. That way it is there waiting for you when you get up in the morning and a motivator to get started early.

Morning is the best time for exercise, however, most of us tend to let life lead us astray. 

 

 

2)      Wake up BEFORE your Kids.  Ten minutes or so is not going to ruin anyone’s day, and it will allow you to get a bite to eat and get your exercise clothes on before rousing the young ‘uns. This way, once they have been dropped off or sent off to school, you can get straight into your exercise routine uninterrupted.

3)      Go straight to the gym. Or the hiking trail. Or the pool. Or wherever your exercise is done. Resist the urge to go home, because chances are you will get distracted by other life issues and never get to where you need to be.

4)      Sign up for a class. This is an excellent way to help keep your exercise goals in focus. Many times having the structured nature of a class can help keep you moving and motivated when individual efforts fail. There’s just something about the notion of “we’re all in this together”.

5)      Get into a workout group. Okay, so maybe a class isn’t your speed, but it still helps to have others around you who are going through the same thing. You can meet, share exercise goals, work out together, and even limp home together when it is all over.  This is something that can be accomplished through a little judicious networking.

If there is a common thread in these tips, it is that you need to stay focused. Lack of focus, or losing that focus is the main reason that most of us never reach our fitness goals. Make sure that everything you do that is related to your fitness regimen is designed to keep your eye on the ball and the goal in site.
